What Are Overdentures?

Overdentures, also known as implant-supported or snap-on dentures, are a type of removable full-arch denture that attaches to dental implants for added support. Compared to traditional removable dentures, they offer increased comfort and stability, making them a preferred option for individuals with extensive bone loss or struggling with ill-fitting dentures.

Depending on your oral anatomy, your dentist may recommend 2-4 dental implants to support the snap-on overdenture, which is removable and anchored in place by a special mechanism.

Overdentures are more comfortable than traditional dentures as they fit naturally over the gum line, alleviating irritation and sore spots.

Overdentures are an excellent alternative to traditional dentures, especially for those with a thin bone ridge, as they provide greater comfort and stability throughout the day. The cost of overdentures varies depending on several factors, but they are typically more affordable than alternatives involving multiple dental implants and permanently attached restorations.

The overdenture procedure involves creating a small opening in the gum tissues to place and secure the implant in the bone. Once the implant is integrated and stable, special locators/attachments are fitted onto the implant abutments to secure the full denture in place.

Compared to traditional dentures, overdentures offer a customized fit, increased confidence, and make it easier to enjoy meals while delaying the effects of bone loss.
